Obituary

Victor J. Varella, Jr. 92, loving husband to Vivian Varella, passed away, April 25, 2020. Born in Peekskill NY, he was the son of the late Victor Varella and Mary Sabato Varella and was the second eldest of four children; Gloria Larese (deceased), Leonard Varella and Rita Blanco. Victor is survived by his wife of 64 years Vivian and his two children; son Victor W. Varella (Wayne), his wife Christine and daughter Victoria and daughter Susan Conklin, husband Gary and daughter Jenna and son Gary Jr., his brother Leonard (Lenny) Varella and sister Rita Blanco and many dear nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. Victor was known by his family and friends as Sonny or Uncle Sonny because of his smile, fondly called Smiley by his wife Vivian. Victor will be remembered as a beloved and devoted husband, father and grandfather.

Growing up on Lincoln Terrace, he was proud to belong to the working class, immigrant neighborhood of Peekskill's Finktown. He learned early about responsibility and hard work. Victor proudly served his country in the Navy and spoke highly of his service time, especially while stationed in Japan and Hawaii. After returning from service he married his beloved wife Vivian in 1955. He worked 43 years in Local 137 International Union of Operating Engineers. He was a great operator and was very proud of his achievements at work. In Victor and Vivian's earlier years they enjoyed entertaining family and friends with neighborhood gatherings and local musicians. They always welcomed family and friends into their home.

It deeply saddens us that due to the Corvid-19 pandemic, visitation and funeral service at E.O. Curry Funeral Home in Peekskill will be limited to his wife, children, grandchildren and brother. Therefore, we look forward to honor Victor and his memory at a memorial life celebration at a future time with his entire family. Burial service will be at the Assumption Cemetery on May 4 at 11 am. Please keep us in your prayers.

In lieu of flowers we ask you please to make an honorary memorial donation to the SPCA of Westchester, website https://spca914.org/donate
