Roy Lawrence McKenzie, of Peekskill transitioned to heaven on April 17, 2020. He was 81 years old and lived a full life. His transition was peaceful and painless at New York Presbyterian hospital in Cortland Manor, due to the Novel Coronavirus COVID-19.
Roy L. McKenzie was born April 2, 1939 in Spartanburg, SC to John Paul and Rosa Mae (Ballenger) McKenzie, who predeceased his death. Roy came to Peekskill, NY with his father and siblings in 1952. He was one of ten siblings. Roy was a kind and gentle mannered man. Roy was very family oriented and a great handyman who mastered many things and passed his knowledge on to his children. Roy was well respected and liked by everyone that knew him, and he would help anyone however he could. Roy was a member and an usher of Mount Lebanon Baptist Church in Peekskill for many years. He was a man of faith and trusted God. Psalm 23 was his favorite passage. Roy was very much loved and honored by his children as well as his siblings. He remained a resident of Peekskill until he transitioned. Roy got his first job at the age of 16 with the City of Peekskill, NY and retired as a foreman of the Department of Public Works in Peekskill, NY on August 12, 1994. Roy entered a marital union with Barbara D. (Holder) McKenzie on January 5, 1963. Roy enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling, and simply spending meaningful time with his family. Roy went to night school and obtained his Ossining High School Diploma/GED in 1984. Roy enjoyed spending time with his siblings and cousins and always had great times of laughter with them. Roy invested in family quality times with his children in his home.
Roy is predeceased by his wife, Barbara D. McKenzie, Mark McKenzie (son), Esther McKenzie, Margaret Elizabeth Mair, Fannie Mae Blackett (sisters), Warren McKenzie, Walter McKenzie and Richard McKenzie (brothers).
Roy is survived by his three loving children, Eric D. McKenzie (Vivian) of Peekskill NY, Angela McKenzie, of Wappingers Falls NY, and Michael McKenzie (Katherine) of Hopewell Junction NY. His loving siblings, Ann Deering (Dennis) of Cambria Heights, Long Island NY, George McKenzie of Michigan, and Benjamin McKenzie of Washington DC.
His loving grandchildren Gregory L Berry of Wappingers Falls, Erika McKenzie of Stone Mountain GA, Anthony D. McKenzie of Peekskill NY, Marcus T. McKenzie, of Hopewell Junction NY and Joseph M. McKenzie of Hopewell junction NY, along with a host of great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Our father will be greatly missed but never forgotten. We will continue to cherish the moments and memories that were formed by love.
Donations in Roy’s name can be made to Caring for the Hungry and Homeless of Peekskill (CHHOP).

“God himself will be with them. And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes
and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore.
The former things have passed away.” (Revelation 21:3,4)
