Phyllis “Marie” Corcoran, of Cortlandt, NY died at the Bethel Nursing Home in Ossining, NY on December 6, 2019. She was 96 years old.
Marie is survived by her children; Michael Goldberg of Fort Worth, TX, Les Goldberg of Annapolis, MD, Richard Goldberg of Herndon, VA, Patrick Corcoran of Cortlandt, NY, Leonard Corcoran of Brewster, NY and her twelve grandchildren and six great- grandchildren.
Marie, as she preferred to be called, was born on September 20, 1923 in Somerset, NY to William and Charlotte Terry. She is preceded in death by her brother Thexton and sister Agnes. While seeking a change outside of the farm life in upstate New York, Marie moved to Chicago in the early 1940’s. While in Chicago, she befriended her “foster” parents Mae and Roy Treadwell and moved to Houston, Texas. It was in Houston where she met and married Max Goldberg. Marie was an active leader in the Houston community and was President of Women’s America ORT, a Jewish Philanthropy organization for five years. After she divorced Max in 1958, Marie moved to Yonkers, NY. In New York, she married Patrick Corcoran in 1960, settling in Peekskill, NY. Patrick died in July 2005.
Marie balanced her time raising five boys, supporting charity work at Freedom Gardens in Mohegan Lake, NY while working in high-end retail stores. She also had a great love for Great Dane dogs and spent ten years breading and showing them, winning numerous awards. Marie settled in her final residence with Patrick and Enza Corcoran in Cortlandt, NY.
Marie passed away peacefully at Bethel Nursing Home after a long illness. She will be forever known as a loving and caring person with a dynamic personality who would go to the ends of the earth for her sons. Marie valued family most of all and displayed a very positive attitude towards life.
A memorial service is planned for this Thursday, December 12, from 11 AM to 1:00 PM at the E.O. Curry Funeral Home in Peekskill, NY followed by her burial at Hillside Cemetery in Cortlandt, NY.
Flowers are welcome or in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the New York Great Dane Rescue organization (, in honor of the Great Danes she loved.
