Obituary

Maurice Aldrich Gantt went home to our Lord on May 11, 2020, passing away at Hudson Valley-New York Presbyterian Hospital after a brief and sudden illness. Those who knew Maurice, even for just a little while, have lost a shining light.
Born on July 14, 1969 in the town of Cortlandt Manor, NY, Maurice was the son of Martha (Poole) and John Henry Gantt. He attended Peekskill elementary and middle schools before graduating from Peekskill High School in 1987. Maurice then attended SUNY Fredonia. He helped put himself through school by DJing, a skill he learned from his brother Michael. An amusing family memory is that this shared interest led to some arguments between the two brothers when Maurice, interested in the music he was hearing his older brother play, stole the music from him!
Maurice went on to graduate from Fredonia with a BA in Accounting. He later earned his Master’s. Maurice found employment at the A&E Network. Working there for over 24 years, Maurice rose to the position of Director of Accounting, a title he held at the time of his death. He received many awards for outstanding job performance, and was highly respected by his peers.
Maurice was a dedicated family man, and he couldn’t have done a better job raising his children Corey and Janessa Straker. He had a special bond with his grandson Kamden, who called Maurice “Pop Pop”. Maurice enjoyed playing, teaching, and sharing his skills with Kamden. He was also very close with his nieces Sidney and Savannah, and his nephew Michael. He was loved by his many cousins, relatives and friends.
Of special note, when Maurice was about 6 years old, he asked Marie Wortham to be his Godmother and she accepted. Since that time this special relationship of love flourished. He called Marie “Mommy Ree”, and she was truly a special friend and second mother.
Maurice had a definite sense of fashion – he was “Mr. GQ”, and “always dressed to kill”. He loved to draw, cook, and travel. He also was a fisherman, like his father. A big football fan, Maurice enjoyed traveling to Texas every year to see the Giants play the Dallas Cowboys. After a friend suggested he learn to play golf, Maurice took lessons in Harrison, NY, and was hooked! Maurice was a member of the Myrtle Beach Sweet 16 Golfing Group, attending their annual golf tournaments for over 12 years.
Maurice was a member of Mt Lebanon Baptist Church for many years.
Maurice was a kind and gentle man, with a genuine smile. He was always willing to help others. He will be missed every day by his mother, Martha Gantt, and brother, Michael G. Gantt, both of Peekskill, NY; his children, Corey and Janessa Straker, and grandson Kamden, all of Charlotte, NC; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his father John Henry Gantt.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Curry Giordano Funeral Home, Peekskill NY.

A GOOD Brother gone too soon. Praying for the Gantt Family. It was never about the golf, but about Brotherhood and "iron sharpens iron".
