Obituary

Joyce A. Robinson
1954 - 2020

Joyce Robinson of New Rochelle transitioned peacefully and comfortably at home on April 2nd, 2020. Joyce Robinson, was a longtime resident of Staten Island, NY and in recent years, moved to New Rochelle to be closer to her daughters and grandchildren. She was 66 years old. Born on January 13, 1954 in Valhalla, NY to the late Jesse Williams and Aretha (Stewart) Williams. She was one of eight children.

Joyce grew up in the town of Peekskill, NY surrounded by a host of siblings, cousins and friends. She later moved to Staten Island as a teenager and studied at the College of Staten Island. It was there she met and married Aurelio Robinson in 1975. They later divorced in 1983. Joyce began working for the Metropolitain Transit Authority as a subway conductor in 1984. As one of the few female employees, Joyce blazed a path up the ladder to become a Tower Operator and then Train Dispatcher. Joyce was passionate about her career and loved her MTA family. She retired after over 25 years of service in 2010.

Joyce loved her family, friends and her community. She believed in the importance of hard work, education, and building towards the future. Her wish for every child was to expand their world beyond their neighborhood. She would take any and every kid to museums, concerts, events and nature hikes in her favorite place, the Hudson Valley. She encouraged all young people to see the value in themselves and invest in their futures through education and vocation.

Joyce was also a strong independent woman with deeply ingrained values of honesty, integrity, and hard work. She was a truth teller and called as she saw it - even if you weren’t ready to hear it. There was always a lesson or some gem you would walk away after speaking to her. It was simply the way she showed love. We will all miss her trademark laugh and beautiful smile.

Her hobbies included photography, traveling, cooking, gardening, politics, and spending time with family. She loved to plan family barbecues & reunions to bring everyone together.

Joyce leaves to cherish her memories two daughters, Jasmine Asare of New Rochelle, Leah Robinson of the Bronx; one son, Stephen Robinson of Utica, NY. She also leaves behind three beloved grandchildren, Emmanuel Asare, Elijah Graves and Christian Asare; four sisters, Ola Mae Sessions of Peekskill, NY, Delois Haughton of Peekskill, NY, Ellen (Debbie) Williams of Bronx, NY, and Bonita Williams of Georgia; one brother, Jesse Williams of Columbus, GA; one aunt, Maudise in Miami, FL and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She is also survived by her first husband, Aurelio Robinson . In addition to her parents, Joyce is predeceased by two brothers, Bobby Williams and William Williams.
