Obituary for Donald F Wood

Peekskill/Cortlandt Manor
Donald F. Wood, 90, of Lakeland Florida, former longtime Peekskill/Cortlandt Manor resident passed away peacefully on December 30, 2019 at his home at Savannah Court Assisted Living in Lakeland.

Donald was born on December 11, 1929 in Peekskill, NY to Earl and Mary Boyle Wood. He attended Peekskill schools.

On June 13, 1953, he married Elizabeth (Betty) May Bremner at the Peekskill Presbyterian Church. They spent many happy years together raising their children in a great neighborhood and they enjoyed camping in the Catskills and Adirondacks. Betty predeceased him in 1992.

Family meant the world to Donald and he was extremely proud of his. Donald is survived by his daughter, Debbie and her husband Lawrence Flood of Cortlandt Manor NY; and his son, Bill Wood and wife Kate of Fishkill NY. He is also survived by granddaughters Jessica and Rebecca Flood, and grandsons Patrick, Daniel and Jack Wood.

Donald lived and worked in the Peekskill area all his life until retiring to Lakeland Florida in 1988. He was a Corporal in the US Army during the Korean War era. Over the years he worked for the Fleischmann Company in Buchanan and the Veteran’s Administration Hospital in Montrose. He retired from Con Edison in Buchanan after 34 years.

Donald was a volunteer and life member of the Peekskill Washington Fire Engine Company and the Mohegan Fire Department. He was a major contributor to the annual clam bakes and he loved a good fireman’s parade. Throughout his younger years, Donald also played on local softball teams and bowling teams. He was a lifelong Giants fan. In retirement he learned to golf and dabbled in oil painting.

In addition to his children, he is survived by one brother, Thomas Wood of Clinton NY. He was predeceased by his brother Earl Wood in 1972.

The family will receive friends at the Curry & Giordano Funeral Home, 313 N. James St, Peekskill, Thursday January 9, 2020 from 2 – 4 pm and 6 – 8 pm. Funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Friday January 10, 2020 at 10 am followed by interment at Hillside Cemetery, Cortlandt Manor.
