Betty was born in NYC on October 12, 1937 to Natalla Green a Swedish immigrant. She lived with her mother until 1943 when due to her mother's increasing illness they were separated and Betty was placed in St. Christopher's School in Dobbs Ferry, NY. From St. Christopher's School, Betty was soon afterwards placed in the foster home of Florence and Spencer See of Peekskill, NY. She remained there until she graduated from Peekskill High School in 1955. After High School, Betty attended Hunter College in Manhattan, majoring in history, and graduated in 1959. While at Hunter, Betty served as President of the Student Government, the Political Science Club and received the Roosevelt Memorial Scholarship Award upon graduation. Betty later went to the University of Pittsburgh to pursue graduate work in history. There she met Prof. J. Duffy and almost immediately began work as a research associate in the history field under grants awarded to Prof. Duffy. She continued that work for a number of years. Later, Betty returned to Westchester where she began work at the MRI division of NY Medical College. When MRI - later renamed the Westchester Institute for Human Development(WIHD) came under the jurisdiction of Westchester Medical Center. Betty became active in union activities there, serving as Secretary of the Westchester County unit of CSEA. Betty was also active in the Employee Council network at the Medical Center serving as President of Council #1 for several years.
